What your BMI results means?

Less than 19 UNDERWEIGHT

You are under optimum weight for your height. Being underweight can carry health risks for both men and women. Check with your doctor or dietitian to find out if your current weight is healthy for you.

20 - 25 ACCEPTABLE

You have a healthy weight for your height

26 - 30 OVERWEIGHT

You are over optimum weight for your height. You may be facing health problems, so losing some weight would be a good idea.

31 + OBESE

You are over optimum weight for your height. You may be facing health risks, so see your doctor to help you achieve a healthier weight.

Some exceptions

The Body Mass Index (BMI) does not distinguish between muscle and body fat weight, so it does not take into account differences in body composition. Elite sportspersons may have a higher BMI due to higher muscle mass not body fat.

This BMI calculator is not suitable for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders whose healthy BMI range may be lower than that for Australians of European descent, due to their ancestry as traditional hunter-gatherers who were lean and physically fit.
